General Description of the Chihuahua

The very smallest dog breed, the Chihuahua is ever vigilant and fleet of foot, with a spunky attitude. Compact with a terrier-like temperament, the Chihuahua has the appearance of a fine-boned but muscular dog that carries his sickle-shaped tail like a flag. The distinctive apple dome head features large eyes, dark or a luminous ruby in color, and large ears that stand erect when the dog is alert and flare out to the sides when at rest. The muzzle is short and pointed with a self-colored nose. Chihuahuas have two coat types, smooth and long. The smooth coat should be soft and close, with a perceptible sheen. Long coats can be flat or wavy, with an undercoat, fringed ears, feathering on the feet and legs, and a tail that looks much like a plume. A Chihuahua’s coat can be of any color or patterning. Many Americans recognize the Chihuahua as the Taco Bell Dog from the popular “Yo quiero Taco Bell” advertising campaign.

Chihuahua Temperament

Alert with terrier-like qualities, the Chihuahua can be irritable, overconfident or downright nasty when provoked. Nevertheless, this spunky little Toy’s intense devotion to its “person” has earned the affection of millions of owners. The Chihuahua is brave and is known to defend itself and its home from large dogs and invaders by barking in protest and threatening mayhem. Chihuahuas are not recommended for homes with small children but do well with elderly individuals or couples, or an owner who loves to spoil. The Chihuahua is typically wary of strangers and unknown dogs (except other Chihuahuas), but gets along well with other pets in the house.

Caring for a Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are a long-lived breed with minimal grooming needs. The smooth coat type should be brushed or wiped with a cloth occasionally; the long coat should be brushed daily. A monthly bath is recommended, but take care to keep the ears dry. This breed is an average shedder. Resist the temptation to carry these little dogs everywhere. They are much happier and fitter when walked; use a harness rather than a collar. Chihuahuas dislike the cold and appreciate a sweater on cool days. They are perfect for apartment living. Their “shivering or trembling” is not always a cold or health issue but often happens when the dog is excited or stressed. Do not allow your Chihuahua to jump off high furniture or from your arms as the impact could have serious consequences. For the same reason, do not allow children to play roughly with or to carry a Chihuahua. A rather healthy breed, the Chihuahua may nevertheless suffer from pulmonic stenosis, patellar luxation, hypoglycemia and hydrocephalus. Have your veterinarian perform all appropriate tests.

General Description of the Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is a powerfully built and well-proportioned dog, whose looks bring to mind a breed designed to hunt and retrieve. The skull is broad and rounded, with a well defined stop and smooth muzzle with a scissors bite. The nose is black or dark brown, and the eyes are deep brown with an amiable and intelligent expression. The neck, chest and forequarters are strong and well developed; the back is level and the body is short coupled. The feet are medium sized and round, and the tail is thick and carried horizontally. The coat is dense and water repellent and can be either straight or wavy, with some feathering on the forelegs and underbody; coloring is in solid shades of gold, without any other markings.

Golden Retriever Temperament

Best known for its ease of training and obedience, the Golden Retriever is a natural-born hunting dog. A properly trained Golden should be calm and polite in the home but ready to go for a romp outside at the drop of a hat. Golden Retrievers enjoy being treated as an integral part of the family, and the breed will return the affection you shower on it tenfold. Because of the dog’s endearing nature, many owners have a tendency to spoil their Goldens and fail to train them properly in obedience. Do not let this happen, as a poorly trained Golden Retriever tends to be rowdy and obnoxiously over-energetic – have fun with your Golden, but make sure it is always clear who is boss. Ever obedient and eager to please, the Golden Retriever has no problem making friends with strangers, cats, other dogs and children. Make no mistake – this dog is a people pleaser.

Caring for a Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is a friendly and sociable animal so it needs human interaction. Daily exercise and challenging obedience lessons and games keep this breed’s body and mind in top form. Although it can live outdoors, the dog prefers to live indoors with its family. The coat does not mat but needs twice-weekly brushing. Major health concerns include canine hip dysplasia, allergies, lymphoma, ear infections and hemangiosarcoma. Less common conditions seen in this breed include elbow dysplasia, entropion, seizures, mast cell tumors and hypothyroidism.

General Description of the Bull Terrier

Strong and handsome, the Bull Terrier is a dog of muscular symmetry and sweet disposition. The head is long and deep, curving from nose to the top of the skull; when viewed from the front, the head should resemble an oval. Eyes are close and deep set, small and triangular. Ears are small, erect and close set; teeth meet in a scissors bite. The body is muscular and big boned, though never coarse. The tail is short and carried horizontally. Feet are round, compact and catlike. The Bull Terrier’s coat is short, glossy and harsh to the hand, and the skin should be tight throughout. Color is either solid white with our without markings on the head, or any color other than white (often brindle) with white markings on the head.

Bull Terrier Temperament

The Bull Terrier is a friendly and gentlemanly dog of inquisitive and imaginative temperament. It is always up for a game or a joke, and enjoys being around people. The Bull Terrier is a notoriously stubborn and assertive breed, and as such it may be a bit much to handle for a first time owner. Those with limited dog experience are encouraged to think twice before adopting this dog, since proper obedience training may be difficult. The Bull Terrier is aloof toward other dogs and, consistent with its terrier heritage, enjoys giving chase to small animals; occasionally, a poorly socialized or abused Bull Terrier may behave aggressively toward other dogs. Bull Terriers are usually pretty friendly toward strangers and other pets, especially when raised with them from a young age.

Caring for a Bull Terrier

Taking your Bull Terrier for a long walk or romp in the park every day will prevent hyperactive behavior and promote good health and long life in the dog. Take care that your dog is stimulated both physically and mentally, or you may come home to find your favorite pair of shoes in tatters. The Bull Terrier can adapt to outdoor living in temperate climates, though it prefers living inside. Coat care is easy, and entails little more than an occasional brushing to remove dead hairs. Some white Bull Terriers carry the Dalmatian’s deafness gene. Other health issues in the breed include hereditary neprhitis, cystic kidney disease, renal dysplasia, SAS, mitral stenosis, dilated cardiomyopathy and allergies.

Getting frustrated that your dog jumps up on people when you are visiting friends? Can’t understand why your dog runs away from you at the park while everyone else’s happily comes back? The simple answer is have you tried dog obedience training? It is simple, effective and very fun to do if you have the right attitude and patience.

The basics of dog obedience training and teaching your dog to sit, stay and come. These basic training commands will be extremely beneficial to you later on in your dog’s life. When you take your dog out you don’t want him to be running muck in the street, you want to show him off for the perfect dog that he is! Dog obedience training can be achieved in a matter of weeks with the right attention, dedication and patience.

There are a lot of obedience classes available. So if you can’t teach your dog by yourself there is plenty support at the class, there are also other dogs there. Not only are you training your dog you are socialising him to which of course is the next step after sit, stay and come. Dogs are kind of like children to an extent, except with a lot of fur, they need to be taught right and wrong.

I always find that treats are a great method of dog obedience training; you award them with a special treat when they have done something you have asked them to. If they don’t respond they don’t get a treat. There is no point shouting at your dog as he will only become scared of you and you don’t want that, you want to form a happy relationship with him. Dog’s are a man’s best friend!

When teaching your dog obedience try and teach him away from distractions like his toys, take him to an empty field or park where there aren’t any people, only you and him. Tell him firmly but nicely that you want him to sit, then take your hand and place it on his back and gently guide his bottom down, when it is down say sit and tell him he’s a good boy then award him with a treat. Repeating this over and over again will make him realise that when you say sit you mean for him to sit and he gets rewarded, soon enough he will know to sit when you tell him to and the treats are no longer necessary.

Getting him to stay is another matter, you’ll probably need another person for that. Get him to sit (once he has learned how) and get a friend to hold him. Walk away from him telling him to stay, using your hand hold it up firmly (doing this will make him realise that when you hold your hand up in the future you want him to stay as well, not just when you tell him to) then give it a few seconds and let your friend release him, when he comes to you make him sit and tell him how clever he is! Don’t forget to reward him. While using this technique you are also teaching your dog how to come to you as well, so don’t forget to say “Come” to him, not just his name.

When dogs are born they are like soft clay, they need to be moulded and shaped. You can teach your dog from any age and the younger you start the easier it is. Like they say: you can’t teach an old dog new tricks!!!

General Description of the Yorkshire Terrier

One of the most popular breeds in the US today, the Yorkshire Terrier – or Yorkie, as it is affectionately called – belongs to the Toy Group. Yorkies are very small, usually between 5 and 7 pounds, with a tight, compact build. The coat is long, fine, and silky, parted down the middle. The hair is of one layer and does not shed. Coloring usually steel blue and tan, although some Yorkies can be found with silver or black hair on their body. Although the hair is usually straight, some individuals have a more wavy coat. The nose, paw pads, eye rims and lips are dark, as are the medium sized eyes. The muzzle is of medium length, and the ears are triangular and carried vertically. Although small, Yorkies are solidly built and well balanced. They walk with confidence, their heads held high. The tail is usually docked to half of the original length.

Yorkshire Terrier Temperament

The Yorkshire Terrier is an intelligent, alert, spunky, happy dog. Ever curious and looking for adventure, the Yorkshire is extremely affectionate, especially with its owners, and makes a very loyal pet. Potential owners should be aware, however, that this dog loves to be spoiled and can be rather demanding. The Yorkshire Terrier can also be territorial, even with much larger dogs, and likes to have its space respected. Yorkies are tolerant of older, respectful children, but are not recommended as companions of young children. The Yorkshire Terrier is a superb watchdog, as it is very alert and defensive of its territory. These dogs also like to bark, although this can be avoided with training. In general, Yorkies are very sweet, loving, friendly dogs, and make good lapdogs or house pets.

Caring for a Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier’s coat needs daily grooming. The hair on top of the head, if grown long, is usually tied into a topknot. Owners who do not plan to show their Yorkshire Terrier in competitions generally keep the dog’s hair rather short, simply as a matter of convenience. The dog’s ears and eyes need constant attention, and must be cleaned often. Since Yorkshire Terriers are very intelligent, they are quick to learn and fairly easy to train. They respond best to consistent, firm training, as they are independent, sometimes very willful dogs. They also respond well to positive reinforcement and praise, since they love to be spoiled. Yorkies do not need to spend a lot of time exercising, and prefer short walks. They are perfectly happy living in an apartment or a house with a small yard. They do, however, like to play a lot, and love any and every form of attention.

General Description of the Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute excels at hauling heavy loads over great distances in brutal conditions, and its construction is consistent with such use. The long body is powerful and well muscled throughout, heavy boned with a straight back and very strong legs; large feet also help the dog to plod through snow. The head and muzzle are large, broad and deep. The ears are set wide apart on the skull, small, triangular and rounded. The eyes are brown, medium sized and almond shaped, and give the dog a kind, endearing expression. The Alaskan Malamute’s outer coat is medium length, coarse and thick, and left untrimmed in show dogs. The undercoat is dense and woolly. The coat can be solid white, but it is more common for white to be the predominant color with various shading of gray, black, sable or red. The face generally has a white mask or blaze. The Alaskan Malamute is distinctly wolf-like in appearance.

Alaskan Malamute Temperament

As befitting a dog that was bred to hunt and pull in packs, the Alaskan Malamute has a sociable and team-oriented personality. The Alaskan Malamute can be aggressive toward strange dogs, and will readily give chase to small and large animals alike. Strangers, however, are another story, and the dog seems to have an instinct to trust people. While this trait makes the Alaskan Malamute a mediocre guard dog, it does much to improve this animal’s standing with people. The Malamute enjoys having a task to perform, and is eager to follow a strong leader. This is not to say, however, that the dog will serve with the same unquestioning obedience of a German Shepherd or Retriever. Quite the contrary: the Alaskan Malamute is a creature of instinct, and if it does not agree with its master’s orders it is likely to disobey them. This strong willed stubbornness can make training a trying task, but a firm hand and an in-control attitude will go far in showing the Malamute who is boss. The breed tends to be docile in the home, and is a loyal and loving family member.

Caring for an Alaskan Malamute

The hardy Alaskan Malamute was once the primary means of transporting heavy loads through the Arctic, and it has never forgotten that legacy. The dog needs vigorous exercise every day to expend its vast reserves of energy. Running, hauling or playing should do the trick. Insufficient exercise can lead to undesirable habits such as incessant howling, digging or destructiveness. The breed excels in cold climates and withers in the heat; make sure this dog is given plenty of water and shelter on hot days. Coat care entails a twice a week brushing; the coat never needs to be trimmed. Health concerns for the Alaskan Malamute include canine hip dysplasia, cataracts, hypothyroidism and chondrodysplasia.

General Description of the Dachshund

Low and long, the Dachshund is powerfully muscled and has a characteristic shape that rarely passes unnoticed. In the US, the Dachshund comes in two sizes: standard and miniature. For each size, there are three coat varieties: Smooth — the most popular in the US, the coat is short, smooth, and shining. Longhair — sleek, glistening, often slightly wavy this coat gives the dog an elegant appearance. Wirehair — with the exception of jaw, eyebrows, and ears, the entire body is covered with a uniform tight, short, thick, rough, hard outer coat but with finer, somewhat softer, shorter hairs (undercoat) everywhere distributed between the coarser hairs. Except for their beards and bushy eyebrows, the wirehaired Dachshund, when viewed from a distance, resembles the smooth. All six Dachshund varieties are similar in body-shape and coloration. The pattern and color range is great and includes solids, two-colored, dappled, and brindle; colors vary and include red, black, cream, chocolate, wild boar, gray, and fawn. The head tapers evenly to the nose, which is always black. The eyes are rimmed in black, medium sized and almond shaped, with a dignified and knowing expression. Adding to this thoughtful look is a pronounced bridge over the dog’s eyes. The dog’s medium length, rounded ears are set near the top of the head. The dog has a strong breastbone and a tucked-in abdomen. Dachshunds move with a fluid and smooth gait.

Dachshund Temperament

Clever, lively, and courageous to the point of recklessness, the Dachshund is tenacious in above and below ground work. All of their senses are well developed. Ever ready for fun and mischief, the Dachshund is known to turn training sessions into a game, and often makes his owner feel as if the balance of power may have shifted without his knowning. They can be willful and clownish, but also uncommonly devoted to their family and moderately protective. Dachshunds are good travelers. Generally, they tolerate other pets; however, if a Dachshund becomes jealous of another pet or is just plain cranky, it can become intractable and aggressive, occasionally to the point of biting. Sometimes they will refuse to be handled. Dachshunds enjoy barking and have a bark that is surprisingly loud for their size. They are compulsive diggers.

Caring for a Dachshund

The Dachshund enjoys a regular walk or a play session in the park, which is usually sufficient to meet its exercise requirments. Do not allow your Dachshund to jump, run down lofty stairs, or be handled by small children without supervision (as much for the dog’s sake as the child’s); the dog’s back and spine are sensitive and easily damaged. The Dachshund’s weight must also be monitored to avoid additional strain on its long back. Dachshunds are not fragile dogs (after all, they were bred for hunting) but a little precaution helps. When holding a Dachshund keep its back horizontal, somewhat like holding a football with the rear quarters tucked under your arm and your hands supporting the chest. Grooming differs with coat type: Longhaired need very regular brushing; Wirehaired need professional trimming every six months or so; and the Smooth requires little more than an occasional rubdown. Dachshunds are average shedders. Housebreaking can be difficult with Dachshunds. Dachshunds are very intelligent dogs, and learn fast, but mostly when it suits their purposes. This is where their stubbornness shows itself most clearly, making some dogs a bit of a challenge to train. Consistency and patience go a long way. Health concerns for this breed include intervertebral disk disease, KCS (Keratocunjunctivitis sicca), diabetes, gastric torsion, patellar luxation and seizures.

If you are a dog owner, chances are you might be aware how frustrating it is to control your dog’s behavior. Some dogs get too aggressive to the point that they become disturbing and irritating to your family and your neighborhood, while others bark excessively for some weird reasons. Many dog owners find themselves clueless and unsure as to what must be done to solve this behavior.

Here are a few tips to help you solve your bestfriend’s nuisance barking:
The primary thing you need to check is if you’re giving your k9 all the things and necessities he needs. Barking is a natural behavior among dogs and they usually bark to communicate something with you. If their needs are not being met, the barking might be a cry or signal that he longs for your care and assistance. Always ensure that you give them the right amount of food and water everyday. You also have to clean after your dog.

Dogs could be barking because of irritation. Flea or tick infestations and skin allergies can cause your dog to make excessive noise. Taking your dog to a veterinarian can help you determine whether or not he is healthy and free from any canine diseases.

If your beloved pet barks a great deal, you might observe that they are either bored or energetic. Don’t let your dog be confined inside your house, instead, take him outside where he can play and interact with other dogs as often as you can. A dog that is properly trained to socialize with people and other animals will not bark excessively. Training your dog is a great way to improve his physical and mental stimulation. Dogs naturally enjoy the outdoor and like to experience new things. The barking problem may be solved when the dog is taken on regular walks.

By and large, dogs bark for they beg for a little attention. So don’t be rude. Never yell, hit or scold your dog when they are barking. These kinds of reaction can aggravate your k9’s anxiety. If your dog barks because he is stressed or lonely then your yelling is just going to confuse and hurt him.

Along with these behavior modification methods, you may also try using some gadgets that are designed to address the barking. You can buy bark control collar and other training collar equipment that will quickly train your canine to stop his nuisance barking.

General Description of the Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is one of the most popular of the Toy breeds. It is well known for its long, flowing, luxurious hair, which covers all of its body. It has a round head, pleasant expression, and large, round, dark eyes. Its ears are large and covered by the coat. Shih Tzus are very small and compact in size, with a broad, deep chest. Their tails are curved and covered with fur. Shih Tzus can be any color, and tend not to shed. Their hair is in fact a double layer, with a woolly undercoat below the longer hair. Shih Tzus are small dogs, and are slightly longer than they are tall.

Shih Tzu Temperament

Shih Tzus are known for being sturdy, attentive, energetic, and responsive dogs. They are best suited to being companion dogs, and are generally easy-going and affectionate. When in a playful mood, Shih Tzus can be feisty and mischievous. Because they are alert and attentive dogs, they make good watchdogs who are fond of barking. If surprised or startled, they can be snappish. Shih Tzus love attention and being spoiled. They are very clever and can be trained, although they are known to be stubborn and a trainer consequently needs to be very patient. Shih Tzus generally get along well with other pets and older children. They do not do well with babies or toddlers, as they have a strong sense of self-importance and can be jealous of little children.

Caring for a Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus are fairly easy to take care of, as they do not require a great deal of exercise. If the owner chooses to keep the hair long, it will require careful daily grooming. If not groomed regularly, tangles and painful mats can develop. Many owners tie the hair on the top of the Shih Tzu’s head into a distinctive topknot so that the dog can see more easily. The hair can, however, be trimmed in order to keep grooming needs to a minimum. Most Shih Tzus enjoy outside exercise or simply running around inside a house or yard. Their eyes are sensitive and need to be cleaned regularly. Known health issues in this breed include canine hip dysplasia, renal dysplasia, entropion, progressive retinal atrophy, trichiasis, patellar luxation and portacaval shunt.
